Tires

Whenever your car has worn-out or damaged tires, you’re at risk of experiencing a blowout or skid. In fact, tire failure causes over 33,000 accidents per year in the US, so the danger is very real. But if you keep an eye out for the following indications of bad tires, you’re far less likely to suffer tire failure. You can have new tires installed at any time at your local Honda dealership.

Does Your Honda Need New Tires?

Unevenly Worn Tire Treads

Tires tend to wear down at an uneven rate due to unevenly distributed pressures from the steering, braking, acceleration, and other factors. While regular tire rotation usually solves this problem, tires that have become excessively uneven may need to be replaced.

Diminished Overall Tire Treads

Tire treads shouldn’t be allowed to diminish beneath 2/32 of an inch. Anything shallower than this significantly reduces road traction. During wet or icy weather, even 2/32 of an inch may be too shallow for safe driving; consider replacing your tires before they reach this stage.

Too Many Cracks in the Sidewalls

After a year or two, most tires develop myriad tiny cracks in the sidewalls. This is a result of the tire rubber starting to dry out. Occasionally, this drying-out process can become excessive, a condition called dry rot. This causes the cracks to spread and deepen rapidly as the rubber becomes brittle, making the tire unsafe to use.

Bulges or Bubbles in the Rubber

Sudden knocks against a tire can sometimes cause bulges or blisters on the surface. These bulges are often an outward sign of internal damage, which also makes the tire unsuitable for use.

Excessively Old Tires

Once a tire passes a certain age, the risk of tire failure increases. It’s unwise to drive on tires past the manufacturer’s recommended expiry date. Also, consider the time limit of the tire warranty if you have one and wish to keep it valid.

Inexplicable Loss of Air Pressure

If one of your tires starts losing air inexplicably, there may be a concealed puncture somewhere. It’s best to have a technician locate and fix the puncture. Otherwise, driving on a tire that’s both punctured and under-inflated puts you at considerable risk on the road.

Have Your Tires Rotated Often at Your Honda Dealer

Routine tire rotation is a great way to keep your tires in good shape. Not only will the technician swap your tires around to even out the rate of wear, but they can also take the opportunity to examine your tires for signs of excessive wear and tear.
