What is the Honda Clarity?
The name Clarity first appeared in 2008 when Honda debuted its hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle. Today there are many different models of Clarity, such as the Clarity FCX, Electric, Plug-In, and Fuel Cell. What they all have in common is each one is a Honda alternative fuel vehicle. The Plug-In Hybrid was added to the lineup just last December, making it the freshest face in the Clarity line.
What Features does the Clarity Have?
The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid is both an electric car and a hybrid. Behind the back seat, a lithium-ion battery pack takes you the first 48 miles on a full charge. After that, the inline-four gasoline-sipping engine under the hood takes over, extending the Clarity's range to a whopping 340 miles. That's more than enough for your morning and evening commute! That translates to a near-unparalleled 110 MPGe on electric and 42 mpg on gasoline. You may forget where the nearest gas station is between refuelings.
What's the Difference Between a Hybrid and a Plug-in?
A hybrid is a beautiful piece of technology, but it can only take you so far. A typical hybrid burns gasoline to power the vehicle, like a conventional vehicle. The difference is the hybrid takes the power normally wasted in braking and shifting and stores it. Once stored, it can be reused to help propel the car.
A plug-in hybrid is a bit different. It can do everything a hybrid does, but has an additional electric engine. It won't even touch the gasoline fuel tank until the electric engine has been mostly depleted. At that point, it switches over to hybrid mode. With a plug-in hybrid, you get the best of both worlds: the gas-free driving of an electric with the extended range of a hybrid.
Who Should Buy the Honda Clarity?
Do you hate knowing you're contributing to your hometown's air pollution, but not enough to take public transportation or carpool? Do you hate the inconvenience and cost of refueling? Do you have a morning and evening commute or regular run-around errands? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, the Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid might be right for you.
